Glass Ceilings and Sticky Floors

Michael Fox has a post linking to this provocative and cleverly titled piece by Rebecca Shambaugh, "Glass Ceiling or Sticky Floor? The Real Reason Women Don't Make It."

Shambaugh contends that it's women, not society, who hold themselves back. The one example Shambaugh gives in this piece (she says more will follow in future articles) is that women don't build strategic relationships:

Women are generally good at building friendships that are nurturing and supportive. But those relationships will not leverage a workplace promotion. Instead, women need to develop contacts with people outside their circle.

I can't comment much on this advice, since it's been a long time since I've worked for someone else. Readers: Would this kind of strategy help women advance at law firms?
