The Commoditization of Legal Services

You've probably heard about commoditization of legal services from lots of lawyers in the U.S. -- but here's a take on the topic from Human Law, a new ALM Legal Blog Watch affiliate.  The post describes how lawyers object to commoditization because (1) it  can be degrading to speak of your service not as from a trusted adviser but as a product, and (2) commoditization can increase competition and put pressure to eliminate the billable hour.  But what the post concludes is that in an age of commoditization, personal contact matters more than ever, because it's one of the only ways to distinguish the service -- or product -- that you provide.
