Blogger's Lawyer Called 'Hero'
Blogger Lance Dutson became an inadvertent cause célèbre earlier this month when a New York ad agency sued him for defamation over a critical post on his blog, Maine Web Report. The ad agency later withdrew the suit, but not before an army of bloggers, led in part by the Media Bloggers Association (to which both Dutson and I belong), came to his defense.
Also coming to his defense were several lawyers. One, Orlando's Greg Herbert, was profiled Friday by the Orlando Sentinel, which called him a Web hero:
"An Orlando lawyer is enjoying hero status on the Internet 'blogosphere' following a legal face-off between a Maine blogger and a subcontractor for Maine's Office of Tourism."
Other lawyers who provided help to Dutson included Jon Stanley and Ron Coleman. While Dutson's lawyers earned praise as heroes, Kevin O'Keefe had a different characterization for the ad agency's lawyers: "In my opinion, the New York ad agency ... and their lawyers look like clowns."
