Obituary: Ernie L. Brooks

Ernie L. Brooks, a highly regarded patent lawyer and founder of the Southfield, Mich., IP firm Brooks Kushman, was killed in a car accident late last week at the age of 64. The National Law Journal named Brooks one of the Nation's Top Litigators, and Lawyers USA named him one of its Lawyers of the Year. He was recently featured on the cover of IP Law & Business for an article regarding advice from top patent litigators on how to sell high-tech cases. Brooks and four other lawyers founded Brooks Kushman in 1983. In the years since, the firm grew to more than 50 lawyers, gaining an international reputation as a leader in IP law.

In a statement, his partners said of Brooks:

"Ernie was a brilliant lawyer and had one of the finest legal minds in the Intellectual Property field. He was a larger than life figure who left an impression on everyone he met, and his sudden passing is felt deeply by those who loved and knew him. Our firm is committed to honoring his memory by continuing his life’s work through our firm."
