Law Firms Hiring MBAs
A JD isn't the only advanced degree that will help you get a job at a law firm. As this article from the Baltimore Sun (9/11/07) reports, increasingly, law firms are hiring MBAs to help manage the business side of Biglaw practice. The article focuses on megafirm DLA Piper's decision to bring in MBAs to support different practice groups. Among other things, MBAs help provide a business rationale for law firm decisions and help improve a law firm's bottom line. Hiring MBAs makes sense because they help relieve lawyers from business responsibilities, leaving them free to bill more hours.
Carolyn Summers, the MBA interviewed in the story, said that, initially, she was skeptical about working for a law firm, but now, she enjoys the position. Still, I wonder how many MBAs without some type of legal background would choose to work for a law firm rather than a big, sexy Fortune 500 company. Perhaps law students who want to work at Biglaw but don't have the law school pedigree or grades might consider a joint MBA-JD and try getting a position at a firm as an MBA rather than a new associate.
