Martindale Links In to LinkedIn

Well look who's linking to LinkedIn -- none other than the great grandaddy of lawyer directories, Martindale-Hubbell. Kevin O'Keefe of Lexblog scooped the story this past Tuesday, reporting that LinkedIn is now powering a social networking function at Martindale.com. According to O'Keefe, here's how the newly integrated system works:

When you go to a law firm listing at Martindale, you'll see the LinkedIn icon to the right of the firm's name.  Click on the icon and you'll be prompted to see employees in the law firm who may be in your LinkedIn network. You'll also be prompted to share with LexisNexis the names and relationships of people within your professional network at LinkedIn, something LinkedIn could not share with LexisNexis contractually or without violating privacy laws without your permission.

Doug Cornelius at KM Space comments that although the "interface is a bit kludgy," adding the LinkedIn feature makes Martindale much more powerful.

With 216,000 lawyers already listed on LinkedIn, Martindale and other lawyer directories can't afford to ignore it. Indeed, moving forward, it will be interesting to see whether standalone or fee-based directories for lawyers or any other professionals -- financial analysts, CPAs or environmental consultants-- can survive against LinkedIn, which gives users an online resume and robust search engine visibility, for free.
