Middle-Aged Male Lawyers Bad-Tempered Due to Lack of Sleep
Ever wonder why your law partner boss is always so grouchy, or why that judge treats the lawyers in his courtroom so rudely? Perhaps you shouldn't take their conduct personally -- they may simply be sleep-deprived. A recent U.K. study showed that divorced male lawyers in their 50s who live in London are the country's worst sleepers, averaging a scant four hours sleep each night. As a result of their lack of sleep, this group of lawyers underperform at work and are prone to bad tempers and emotional outbursts.
True, the study did not include lawyers here in the U.S. But the overall conclusion that lack of sleep generally makes folks grumpier at work seems universal -- and no doubt might explain some of the uncivilized conduct in our profession.
