An Immigration Treatise Haiku Contest?

    Bewildered blogger
    Comes upon haiku contest.
    Fodder for a post.

Having missed the initial announcement, I have no idea why the American Immigration Lawyers Association decided to commemorate the arrival of the 11th edition of Kurzban's Immigration Law Sourcebook with a haiku contest. But it did, receiving more than 90 entries. This week, AILA announced the five winners, each of whom gets to designate a nonprofit entity to receive a complementary copy of the book. Of the five winning entries, my favorites are:

    The Book or the Author?
    Not much to look at,

    Yet so much knowledge inside,
    Sexy after all.
-by Lesley Amano, Baltimore, Md. (Donation to ASHA, Inc., Asian Women's Self-Help Association, Rockville, Md.)

Who Needs the Gym Any More?
    The Book's a monster.

    Five pounds of endless knowledge.

    Weight-train now in court.

-by Lacy L. Brinson, Miami, Fla. (Donation to Jacksonville Legal Aid, Jacksonville, Fla.)

    The Impact of the Law

    Big toe is throbbing.

    I dropped Kurzban's upon it.

    A weighty treatise.

-by David N. Simmons, Denver, Colo. (Donation to Lutheran Family Services, Denver, Colo.)

Read the other winning entries and the full slate of entries. My thanks for the tip-off to Laura Orr at Oregon Legal Research.
