Lawyer sanctions 2003, an ABA report

Bob Ambrogi reports the latest attorney discipline statistics released by the American Bar Association for 2003. Looks like the final number could have been a lot worse:

  • Complaints to disciplinary agencies: 119,863.
  • Complaints left over from previous year: 32,422.
  • Complaints dismissed because agency lacked jurisdiction or complaint lacked facts constituting professional misconduct: 62,000.
  • Complaints dismissed after formal investigation: 45,000.
  • Complaints warranting formal charges: 79,150.
  • Number of lawyers against whom complaints warranting formal charges that were actually brought during the year:  2,912.
  • Cases in which private sanctions were imposed:  2,495.
  • Cases in which public sanctions were imposed: 3,725.
