From Blogging to Bankruptcy

Here at Legal Blog Watch, my colleague Carolyn Elefant and I have both written (here and here) about the case of former Washingtonienne blogger Jessica Cutler. Cutler was the Capitol Hill intern who wrote a blog detailing her sex life and went on to get a big book deal and a photo spread in Playboy. One of Cutler's paramours was Robert Steinbuch, then staff counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee. Steinbuch sued Cutler for invading his privacy and the case continues to plod along in the D.C. federal court.

Now, Cutler says the prolonged legal battle has forced her to file a Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition in New York. According to Associated Press, Cutler filed a copy of the petition in the D.C. court, along with documents saying that she is unable to pay her credit card bill, legal fees and student loans. In response to an AP reporter's call, Cutler would not say where the money went that she earned from her book and Playboy shoot. But at Overlawyered,  David Nieporent comments that, while we don't know where all her money went, "we know a good chunk of it went to her attorneys." He adds: "Good luck collecting that $20 million, Mr. Steinbuch."
