Ranking the Ranking System

The legal profession's obsession with rankings hardly qualifies as news.  But did you know that there are more than 700 different lists that rank lawyers, according to a new blog, Rankings for Lawyers?  As my colleague, Robert Ambrogi reports in this post, legal marketing firm Jaffe Associates just unveiled a new service to help law firm marketers keep track of ranking opportunities and decide which ones should be pursued.

In case you're curious, here are a couple of ways that law firms are ranked:  Forty seven programs provide pro bono rankings, while 83 systems focus on diversity efforts.  California has the most surveys, while Wyoming, Idaho and Montana have the fewest.  And 154 survey highlight the best, super or top lawyers.

With so many different ranking systems, do any of them really matter at all any more?
