Obituary: Patent Attorney Mark Banner

Banner Dennis Crouch at Patently-O reports the death of Mark T. Banner, a partner in the Chicago office of the law firm Banner & Witcoff. "Mark was generous and helpful to me in my first few years of practice in Chicago," Crouch writes. "He was also an occasional Patently-O contributor." Mr. Banner died Dec. 30 in Tucson, Ariz., just three weeks shy of his 58th birthday. He had battled cancer for the last five years, but continued to work on legal matters.

Among the accomplishments of his nearly 30-year legal career, Mr. Banner had been chair of the American Bar Association Section of Intellectual Property Law and a longtime member of the section's 16-lawyer council. He had served as editor for the ABA Section of Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law, contributing editor of the Quarterly Journal of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and chairman of the Illinois State Bar Association Section of Intellectual Property Law.

In a remembrance posted by his firm, its president, Thomas K. Pratt, said, "Mark made significant contributions to the field of intellectual property law. He was an extremely gifted attorney, a loyal partner, and a devoted friend. Mark was an integral part of the firm and will be greatly missed."
