Spitzer and Wall: Harvard Power Couple

Rtpwinter22007 What a difference a year makes. It was just last year that 02138, a swanky lifestyle magazine for Harvard alumni, featured law grads Silda Wall and Eliot Spitzer on its cover -- the couple selected to illustrate the magazine's Winter 2007 feature, Power Couples, profiles of Harvard-Harvard duos who "all earn high honors in chemistry." Featured on the Web page introducing the story, in all its hindsight irony, was this quote pulled from the profile: "Asked if she and her husband take time together, just the two of them, [Silda] Wall laughs. '...it's hard to say that we do.'"

Describing the interplay between Wall and Spitzer as "crackling energy," the profile relates how, after they met in law school, Wall pursed a fast-track career handling M&As at Skadden, then international transactions at Chase Manhattan before deciding to become a stay-at-home mom for the couple's three daughters, giving up a salary that, for many years, was substantially larger than her husband's. Campaigning for him during his run for governor, the profile says, Wall "reminded voters that Spitzer is also a family man who likes to grill on weekends, wear sneakers, and watch NASCAR."

Boston Herald media writer Jessica Heslam reports that the editors of 02138 chose the couple for its cover because they were "so impressed with their 'natural' adoration for one another." Executive Editor Richard Bradley told Heslam, "They gave every impression of being a couple still in love after all these years." In the article, Spitzer is quoted saying, "There are two things I hate in politics, raising money and posing for pictures." Now there is a third, Bradley jokes to Heslam: "Having to admit that you have been seeing a prostitute."
