U.S. News to Rank Law Firms

Is U.S. News & World Report some kind of glutton for punishment? We've posted here previously about the various criticisms that U.S. News' law school rankings have generated, to the point that they've spawned a competitor rating system, Brian Leiter's Law School Rankings. Now U.S. News is taking on an even bigger target. As reported in The Washington Business Journal, the U.S. News Media Group will begin ranking the nation's law firms. According to the article:

The rankings will evaluate more than 3,000 firms across the country using objective data in addition to surveys from more than 40,000 private practice lawyers, 20,000 clients and thousands of law firm employees. Results will appear in a variety of print and online products focused on consumers and legal professionals.

Should be interesting to see what kind of backlash their law firm ranking system generates. Check back in the fall, when the rankings are expected to come out, for a follow-up post on the reaction from the law firms and the blogosphere.
