Canadian SunChips Scoreboard: Mother Earth 1, Noisy Bags Haters 0

Sunchips The members of my family are fans of SunChips, and we were interested observers when SunChip-maker Frito-Lay switched to a new, 100 percent biodegradable bag for the product. But wow, that bag was noisy. How noisy?

  • Noisy enough that every time we opened the bag my wife and I laughed out loud at how noisy it was.
  • Noisy enough that the bag had a special label acknowledging/apologizing for being so noisy.
  • Noisy enough that people made videos documenting its noisiness.
  • Noisy enough that over 52,000 people have joined a Facebook group called, "SORRY, BUT I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE SUNCHIPS BAG!"
  • Noisy enough that so many people stopped buying SunChips that Frito-Lay largely abandoned the biodegradable packaging in favor of the old packaging that probably takes a century to disappear from this earth.

But up in Canada, chip makers are not so quick to turn their backs on Mother Earth just because of a few (thousand) complainers. Frito-Lay Canada has gone in its own direction, sticking with the noisy bags and launching a consumer awareness campaign to help the public understand its environmental benefits.

According to Sustainable Food News, the slogan for the Canadian awareness campaign is "Our bag is loud, our bag is different, our bag is good for the environment, and our bag will remain
on store shelves." Go Canada!

Check out the video message below from the "Sustainability Leader" for Frito-Lay Canada explaining the bags and offering free earplugs to those who cannot cope with the noise.
